Just the Facts

I have been busy lately, what is up with that? So, to save time, I am just going to update you on some facts and leave the emotion out of this ...

I went to Moab with Rachel and Michelle (fellow atmos students) two weekends ago. I rode my bike about 80 miles. We ate food and drank coffee, and Rachel and Michelle consumed lots of cold medicine.

My friend Laurie, her husband Stuart and cousin Evan came to visit last weekend. We went to Winter Park. It snowed 4 inches Friday night and was sunny and clear all weekend. Chris hit a tree on Sunday but is okay. We ate tacos that were better than expected.

I had four cups of coffee on Monday and worked until 11:30 at night to try to make up for all the work I've been missing lately.

Last night I swam and rode my bike, then went out to eat and made enough of a stink about being hungry that the waiter put an appetizer for 8 people in front of me.

Chris and I are going to Atlanta this weekend to visit his grandfather.

I wish I had more time to write on here, but I have a stack of 20 papers on my desk that I want to read.

I am very sad that the Orbiting Carbon Observatory crashed into the Southern Ocean.

These are pictures from Moab from Michelle, maybe one day I will have time to download my photos:

Life as a grad student

Today during coffee group we had a funny/sad conversation about how our social skills seem to be deteriorating the longer we are in grad school. This got me thinking - how we are in this predicament of grad school and have these experiences that if experienced alone would be awful, but since we're all going through it together (I'm not the only one who uses 'positive feedback' in normal conversation), we might as well laugh at ourselves. I thought I'd modify it to fit my life.

You might be a grad student if ...
1. you have ever brought a scholarly article on a long bike ride

2. you rate coffee shops by the availability of outlets for your laptop and how much they charge for refills

3. you have ever discussed academic matters while snowshoeing

4. you wonder if APA style allows you to cite talking to yourself as "personal communication."

5. you have two coffee makers, phone charger, microwave, blanket, enough food for a few meals, and sofa in your office

6. you procrastinate on one project by working on another project.

7. you are working on one thing but feeling guilty that you aren't working on the other thing.

8. Your husband forgets that he's married but wonders where all the peanut butter has gone.

9. people (non-grad students) ask you "Are you going to be done soon?" and you laugh but inside a little part of you dies.

10. you've spent multiple nights in your office

11. sleeping in means sleeping until 8:00

12. you consider luna bar + latte a proper lunch/dinner

13. you've slept with your laptop at your bedside, and checked your program as soon as you wake up.

14. everything reminds you of something in your discipline.

15. you look forward to summers because you're more productive without the distraction of classes.

16. you have accepted guilt as an inherent feature of relaxation.

17. you reflexively start analyzing those greek letters before you realize that it's a sorority sweatshirt, not an equation.

18. you consider caffeine to be a major food group.

19. you've worked on your thesis in the few hours between eating breakfast and racing in a triathlon

20. Saturday nights spent studying no longer seem weird.

21. you find yourself citing sources in conversation.

22. you ask for the IPCC report for your Christmas gift from your husband, and are really disappointed when you don't get it

Yes - I affirm that these are all true. If you read this and can think of others, let me know, and we can laugh at each other. (By the way, a lot of these I 'borrowed from this facebook group: Grad Students: they're Not Bad People, they Just Made Terrible Life Choices).

A great week

This week has been really good, amazingly. It's a pleasant surprise when I'm in a really good mood for the majority of a week, and I make it to Friday not feeling like I've been hit by a large moving object. Here are some of the nice things that have happened:

- Chris and I had an excellent weekend. It was a perfect mix of productivity (we finished fixing our fence in our backyard), fun (biking Saturday & snowboarding Sunday), and relaxing (I ate about 3 lb's of Chinese food on Saturday).
- I finished working on draft #2 of a paper I hope to submit, and sent it to my adviser and a couple other people for comments. This has been on my desk since November so it's nice to have made some progress this week!
- Chris and I got a book on hiking the Haute Route on Wednesday - now the planning for our trip can begin in earnest!
- We got two cats a couple of weeks ago and they are keeping us entertained.
- I hung out with some girlfriends for Michelle's birthday Tuesday night and had a really good time, even though I suck at both guitar hero and the word game we played.
- The weather has been amazing and I've been trying to enjoy it (ie: see previous post).
- I registered for a half ironman today!
- I'm hanging out with girlfriends again tonight at Cafe Vino, where I hope to enjoy some of the restaurant's namesake.
- Heroes is back on TV.

Welcome to my Brain

8:50 AM
Today I am doing an experiment. I am going to blog all day! Hahaha! Well, I am just going to post my random thoughts on here as the day goes on. It should be interesting.
Right now I'm trying to learn more about moist static energy so I can interpret some plots I made yesterday. I'm working on a paper and I want to make my results section as exciting (ha) as possible.

9:43 AM
I can't wait to ride my bike this afternoon! It is supposed to be sunny and in the 60's :)
Also, I like facebook a lot. You might say I am addicted. I love seeing what my friends are up to. Sometimes it makes me a little sad though to realize how many awesome people I have lost touch with, but at least I can pseudo keep in touch with facebook.

11:01 AM
I'm hungry and my plots are annoying me.

12:05
I kind of ate a big lunch but I'm doing a mini-TT on my ride so I want to be ready! And I put a good playlist with lots of fast-paced songs on my shuffle. Meanwhile, I am still thinking about moist static energy.

1:33
59 degrees, 7 mph winds - I'm going for a ride! I also have some pretty plots of the atmospheric heating rate.

4:58 PM
My ride was great. Now I am plotting composites of wet and dry season variables. If I ever stop thinking of new plots to create, I might actually finish writing this paper one day.

5:20
Nick is reciting Julian days of the year, and I am annoyed that IDL if/then statements are stupid.

5:52 PM
Well it's been a good day. I got to work at 8:00, so it's also been a long day. But I've been in a surprisingly good mood all day. And, it seems from this little experiment that, when not working, I spend most of my time thinking about food and biking. No surprise there, really.

Thanks for reading!
